Abstract
This paper examined the effects of social activities for the elderly. We divided them into social participation and economic participation, and estimated their respective impacts upon the level of satisfaction with life for a national sample of 4,362 elderly respondents. The respondents are aged between 60 and 79 and obtained from the 4th year(2012) data of Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging(KLoSA). The elderly social activities were conceptually separated because of the following reasons£ºmany empirical studies have produced inconsistent results on the effects of social activity by entangling different elements into the concept of social activity; some evidence has shown that the economic and the social participations may have different effects and mechanisms upon the quality of life; and there is also a support for the conceptual separation at the logical and theoretical level. We established and tested an empirical model containing measures of the social and the economic participations along with socio-economic factors. Results from descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and hierarchical regression analyses in general have confirmed that the social and the economic participations have exerted significant independent effects upon the satisfaction level of older adults, the former having a relatively larger one. Also we found the role of economic participation is statistically significant only when the elderly have an economic need to work. We concluded this study by suggesting some implications for social welfare policies that aim to promote the social activities among old adults.
